Abstract

The studies that appear in this proposal examine the effectiveness of external incentives (monetary and reputation concerns) and intrinsic incentives regarding volunteer behavior. I show that sometimes people consider additional considerations beyond external incentives when it comes to social activity. For example, providing monetary incentives to foster prosocial behavior sometimes backfires, reducing the total contribution provided by agents (crowding-out) as investigated in the first study.
