The curious culture of economic theory
This lecture is based on my new book "The Curious Culture of Economic Theory" (published by MIT Press), which is a collection of essays about the professional culture of contemporary economic theory. Among other things, the book subjects modern classics of economic theory to "style criticism". It shows how rhetorical gambits and minor modeling choices affected the reception of these classics by academic economists, and tries to draw broader lessons about our professional culture. In the lecture, I'll sample a few of these exercises, covering the models known as Bayesian Persuasion, Global Games and Rational Inattention.
