Abstract: We study the effect of a reform that increased the stakes of the national exam for university enrolment in Spain, in detriment of high school grades. We find a large negative effect of the reform on female test scores, driven by a worse performance in the exams for which the stakes increase the most, and driven by students expected to be top performers. The effect on female performance translates into significant changes in students' allocation to college: the percentage of female students in the most selective degrees declines, together with expected labour market outcomes. building 504, seminar room 011. אוניברסיטת בר-אילן - Department of Economics Economics.Dept@mail.biu.ac.il Asia/Jerusalem public
